“Our work at Tampa was an attempt to release people into space, to provide an experience markedly different from that of the city surround - much like the ancient Persian concept of paradise.”
- Dan Kiley
The exhibition includes major publically accessible commissions including the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, MO (which features the arch designed by Eero Saarinen); the Miller House and Garden in Columbus, IN (another collaboration with Saarinen and later Kevin Roche) now owned and operated by the Indianapolis Museum of Art; The Ford Foundation Atrium in New York, NY; the Art Institute of Chicago, South Garden, Chicago, IL; and Kiley Garden, which is situated right next to the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) in downtown Tampa. This 3.5 acre public park (plaza) along Tampa’s Riverwalk includes the original amphitheatre and rooftop garden with geometric grid. Historic photographs of its original design will be included.
Presented by The Cultural Landscape Foundation and sponsored by The Davey Tree Expert Company and Victor Stanley, Inc.

Our Mission
Tampa’s Kiley Garden, a masterwork by the foremost Modernist landscape architect in America, Dan Kiley, needs restoration. By making the public aware of Dan Kiley’s international stature, and the prominence and beauty that this garden brings to Tampa, we can gather the resources to replace the trees and restore the amphitheater to its original glory.
In its mission of promoting quality architecture and design in our community, The Tampa Bay Center for Architecture and Design and Friends of Kiley Garden are collaborating to raise the private funds needed for the garden’s restoration.
Goals of Friends of Kiley Garden:
Engage the owners of Rivergate Tower in an understanding of the benefit for them to own Kiley Garden so they may control the maintenance and security of the property.
Develop a public awareness campaign using social media to mobilize public and private support for the restoration effort.
Bring the exhibition about Dan Kiley, created by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF), to the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoFA) in spring 2022.
Organize press conferences, programs and walking tours of Kiley Garden during the FMoPA exhibit, to increase public awareness of the need to restore this local treasure.
Spearhead a public/private engineering study to determine the cost for Kiley Garden’s restoration. This study will need to analyze structural issues as well as phased restoration costs.
