HIP HOP ARCHITECTURE
Hip Hop Architecture explores the intersection of Hip Hop culture and the built environment through three interconnected realms; media, professional practice, and academia.
The goal of Hip Hop Architecture is to increase the number of underrepresented populations in the practice of architecture while simultaneously creating a new approach to architecture and design, one based on the Hip Hop's founding elements (DJ, Emcee, Graffiti and B-Boy/ B-Girl). Hip Hop Architecture is a manifestation of the widely accepted fifth element of Hip Hop, Knowledge.
From June 10 to 14 students met at the Dream Center of Tampa bay to take part in this week-long, hands on experience.
Students designed and and created models inspired by hip hop lyrics while learning about how architecture and design transform their city. They also created 'freestyle' models of public art that inspired them.
Students were challenged to write raps about the changes they want to see in their community and those with the top 4 verses had the opportunity to record and produce a song with their peers. All of the kids came together on the last day to film a music video to their song in the heart of their community— Ybor City.
